The Endangered Acadian Forest: Time for Change

The Council will work with the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources to develop policy goals and objectives for Crown land concerning forest management and protection. The group will work on creating new special management areas where only sustainable forestry practices are permitted, and establish additional conservation areas where little or no cutting would be permitted.

Protecting the Diverse Values of Nova Scotia's Acadian forests.

The Ecology Action Centre is undertaking forest policy research and building a coalition of organizations to raise public awareness. These activities are designed to support policies and regulations that improve sustainable forest practices in Nova Scotia.

Canada's Remaining Wild Forests
$150,000 over two years
This project is a joint effort between the Federation of Alberta Naturalists and Global Forest Watch Canada to identify the remaining intact forests in Canada. This information will be mapped at a scale of 5,000 ha for temperate forests and 10,000 ha for the Boreal forest. Identifying these intact forest areas will help set priorities for conservation efforts.

Accountability in Ontario's Forest Industry: Inspection and Compliance

Northern Protected Areas Project

Working with partner groups such as CPAWS-Wildlands League and World Wildlife Fund Canada, Ontario Nature will identify and secure 20 to 30 new protected areas (covering 100,000 to 150,000 hectares), and will ensure that ecological integrity becomes the overarching principle for protected areas.

Boreal Program

In collaboration with ForestEthics Canada, this project focuses on using market tools to protect Canada's boreal forest. The collaborators will encourage users of boreal wood products in the U.S. to use only wood from FSC-certified forests in Canada. Moreover, Sage and ForestEthics will push for the creation of interim logging deferrals and expanded protected areas.

Building the Capacity of Conservation NGOs in Atlantic Canada

This proposal is a follow-up to a planning grant where the Network identified capacity needs in Atlantic Canada. With this grant, the Network will engage a local non-profit management expert to research and develop a capacity building program tailored to the needs of conservation organizations in the region.

In collaboration with the Eco-Lumber Co-op this marketing project will promote the use of FSC materials in major Canadian building projects by developing FSC market linkages, increasing the profile and appeal of FSC certification, and bridging the gap between FSC suppliers and the building market.

Putting the Forest First: Conservation Solutions for Ontario's Forests
$320,000 over two years
This grant supports the League's Forest Program to ensure that conservation commitments for government and industry lead to measurable changes in how forestry is carried out, lead to new protected areas. This grant will help the Wildlands League ensure that implementation of FSC certification sets a 'high bar.' Finally, this grant provides support for staff training, fundraising capacity and organizational infrastructure.

Promoting Sustainable Forestry Practices

World Wildlife Fund Canada and FSC Canada are collaborating to strengthen the capacity of FSC Canada. To do so, they will finalize largely supported forest practice standards, develop broadly supported certification outcomes, and implement a continuous learning approach so that FSC standards remain relevant and effective. The grant will also enhance and align governance and leadership at FSC with their strategic direction.

Transformation AGO: Supporting Contemporary Art Acquisition at the AGO

As part of the $194.8 million Transformation AGO project, contemporary art will have a new prominence in the Gehry-designed galleries. With this grant, the Ivey Foundation is becoming the founding partner in creating a multi-million dollar art acquisition endowment fund. With a goal of $5 million, the AGO anticipates that the Fund will generate about $250,000 annually to allow in perpetuity the purchase of contemporary works of art.

It's Time to Blossom Capital Campaign

The Toronto Botanical Gardens is renovating and expanding its facilities by adding 5,000 square feet to the facility and four acres of garden.
