Protecting High Conservation Value Forests in the Primrose Lakeland

Covering an area of approximately 1.5 million acres, the Primrose Lakeland is a biologically rich area of the Boreal forest in northeastern Alberta. The Wilderness Association is creating awareness through strategic communications and outreach activities intended to help Alberta Pacific Forests Products achieve FSC certification. Engaging a wide range of stakeholders and non-traditional allies, the Association will work to protect the Primrose Lakeland through a formal agreement with affected parties that outlines key conservation values with to goal to preserve the area for future generations.

The National Forest Strategy (NFS) is prepared every five years by a coalition of governmental, industry and NGO interests. The current strategy (2003-2008) includes a number of opportunities for conservation benefits. The Sierra Club is using this grant to raise awareness of progressive commitments and accomplishments, develop a national overview of conservation policies and practices, produce annual Report Cards on implementing National Forest Strategy commitments, and carry out a series of case studies to illustrate how key NFS commitments are being implemented, or whether implementation is failing to meet expectations.

Filling the Gaps: Identifying and Protecting High Conservation Value Forests Across Canada's Boreal Region
$200,000 over two years
The World Wildlife Fund is working to foster FSC certification and identify, assess and map High Conservation Value Forests within working forests in Canada. They are evaluating protected area networks in forest license areas to determine which forests most urgently require protection to fill ecological gaps. WWF is also developing on-line conservation toolkits to enlist the forest industry in the identification and protection of High Conservation Value Forests. Finally, WWF is working to secure a public commitment from another major Canadian forest products company to achieve FSC certification of all of their woodlands.

The Forests of Opportunity: Ecosystem-Based Planning and Policy Development for the Yukon

In the Yukon, a multi-party agreement provides an opportunity to plan the management of an 110,000 km2 area in the Kaska First Nation territory. The Yukon Conservation Society is participating in this planning process, leading to the implementation of state of the art ecosystem-based forestry practices and the development of a tenure system that facilitates FSC certification.
